Day of celebration for Black Country pupils
Primary and secondary pupils across the Black Country were awarded for their achievements at this year’s annual Student Awards ceremony which took place on the 4th November at Dudley Zoological Gardens, in association with Express and Star. Michael Collie and Satnam Rana from BBC Midlands Today hosted the event, where they announced the winners of the Student Awards competition.
The winners of the Key Stage 3 categories were:
Performing Arts – Hannah Johns, Harriett Charlton, Ellie Garratt, Gemma Butler, Stevie Ingram and Kamil Haris from Q3 Academy in Sandwell.
Science – Wesley Rawlings from Barr Beacon Language College in Walsall.
New Media – Josh Harris and Connor Harris from Hillcrest School and Community College in Dudley.
Writing for the Media – Jessica Rowley from The Ellowes Hall School in Dudley.
Music – Govind Chopra from Menzies High School Science College in Sandwell.
Business and Enterprise – Paige Walker, Billie-Jo Hamilton, Eleanor Steedman, Natalie Cockle, Annastasia Webber and Rachel Archer from Ridgewood High School in Dudley.
The winners of the Key Stage 3 categories won amazing prizes including a day at the National Physical Laboratory, work experience at Carillion construction company, a day at the Express & Star newspaper office, producing a three-minute film with ICENI, working with Royal Shakespeare Company actors and having their winning music composition performed by a Brass Band. A representative from each sponsor presented the award to the winner.
The following Key Stage 4 pupils received the Star Pupil award, which recognises their achievements and contributions in school and the wider community;

Sarah King from Wood Green College of Sports, Maths & Computing in Sandwell
Jodie Westwood from Shire Oak – A Science College in Walsall
Katherine Harris from The Earls High School in Dudley
Gurbinder Manku from Bristnall Hall Technology College in Sandwell
Bethany Adams from The Kingswinford School in Dudley
Daniel Hughes from The Westminister School in Sandwell
Lucy Hall from Windsor High School in Dudley
Steven Donnison from Dormston School in Dudley
Muneeba Zahara from Redhill School in Dudley
Ben Cowley from Moreton Community School in Wolverhampton
Jack Hayes from Barr Beacon Language College in Walsall
Lynsey Butler from St Thomas More Catholic School and Sarah King from Wood Green College of Sports, Maths and Computing were selected at random during the ceremony by Michael Collie and Satnam Rana to win a VIP trip to the Mailbox in Birmingham to watch the live broadcast of BBC Midlands Today.
The following schools from each local authority were selected at random from all the entries for the secondary Student Awards to win a tour of Beacon radio:

The Ellowes Hall School in Dudley
In the Primary ceremony Hamstead Junior School fromSandwell, Bantock Primary School from
Wolverhampton, Leighswood School from Walsall and St James’s CE School from Dudley won the ‘My School Is Great’ award. Prizes for the winning schools from each local authority included a trip to the Black Country Living Museum, an animal adoption package at Dudley Zoological Gardens, a trip to Wolverhampton Molineux and the opportunity to trial the latest Microsoft technology respectively.
The overall primary school winner from all four local authorities was Trinity Church of England Primary school in Wolverhampton.
The school won a trip to the Public where pupils will receive a self-portrait, attend a professional led creative art workshop and participate in a major adverting campaign. Click here, on the link to the left to view their winning video.
